Some NZ lawmaking

(<-Our #1 Hotty Prime Minister, Mrs. Helen Clark)

Interesting legislation just passed in New Zealand...

Dubbed the "anti-smacking" law, it has been very divisive.

It may mean you can't spank your kids anymore, it may not... Like all New Zealand law, written vaguely and left up to the courts to decide.

Anyway, maybe Mr. Irgens will find it interesting. I think it is neat from a government intrusion / liberty erosion vs. protection of innocents standpoint. They say people were using the old wording of the law that allowed reasonable disciplinary force to escape prosecution for whipping their kids with horsewhip, etc. Now police get to use their discretion! Cause they have the public good in mind. Wink Wink.

uh huh - it seems like this would be a fairly easy problem to solve. for instance the most common child abusive weapons could simply be added to a comment to the statute (whip, belt, etc) or they could just have a presumptive rule about something not being child abuse if it is spanking, does not lead to bruising etc. however, the law is always going to have HUGE problems trying to legislate family relationships just because it's so hard to figure out what's going on - there is no way to get rational believable testimony etc
