Neat

"Based on what you've told us so far, we're playing this track because it features mild rhythmic syncopation, extensive vamping, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, a clear focus on recording studio production and minor key tonality"

Since we were typings things about music, I just went to a site...

www.pandora.com

which posits that if you give it the name of a song or band, it will find you similar music that you will like. and it plays the music! which is cool. I typed in Pink Floyd, which is broad, and it played a nice Floyd song I had never heard that they contended exemplified the band, and now it is playing "My Very Nervous Breakdown" by Television, which I'll grant does seem rather similar to Floyd, and anyway I am satisfied with. ohh and it's about to change again. Okay nowit is playing "Going Down Again" by Crazy Horse. Anyway, strikes me as a nice way to find new music, pretty remarkable that it plays whole songs.

Light our darkest hour

Tycho at Penny-Arcade reflecting on the recent birth of his son:

"They handed him to me, eventually. Not first, now - that's not done. The physchological weight of him nearly shattered my legs. This must have been how Ultra Magnus felt, I thought, when Optimus Prime gave him the Matrix of Leadership."

inside jokes

i think for historical purposes we should try and list every single inside joke. and i must warn you that i plan on going waaaaaay back here - the earliest i can remember here is from some time in middle school...
i'll start us off:
my planes .... my planes
hyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyuuuuuuuurg ... plop
c'est un monstre

the musical bands

lady sovereign: man imagine eminem's annoying more pop rap but performed by obnoxious british women
nick cave: he;s like got a pretty interesting voice. maybe just because his name is nick i think of nick drake but it's not that similar - it's more countryish.
pj harvey: she's a woman with a very deep voice. most likely a lesbian.
yo la tengo and american analog set: very pleasant but not very envigorating
bright eyes: ken they are emo beyond emo - so thoroughly depressing.
ladysmith black mambazo: they do the first part to diamonds on the soles of her shoes with paul simon.
my morning jacket: straight up pleasant rock and roll done well - with a bit of a southern folksy twist.

A guiding light

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

~Henry J. Tillman

Also, was looking for a Vonnegut quote that would work in my statement of purpose. Found this from Mother Night. Sadly, too long:

"It all adds up," he said. "People don't realize." He shook his head. "What should people do?"
"Obey the laws," I said.
"They don't even want to do that, half of 'em," he said. "The things I see - the things people say to me. Sometimes I get very discouraged."
"Everybody does that from time to time," I said.
"I guess it's partly chemistry," he said.
"What is?" I said.
"Getting down in the dumps," he said. "Isn't that what they're finding out - that a lot of that's chemicals?"
"I don't know," I said.
"That's what I read," he said. "That's one of the things they're finding out."
"Very interesting," I said.
"They can give a man certain chemicals, and he goes crazy," he said. "That's one of the things they're working with. Maybe it's all chemicals."
"Very possible," I said.
"Maybe it's different chemicals that different countries eat that makes people act in different ways at different times," he said.
"I'd never thought of that before," I said.
"Why else would people change so much?" he said. "My brother was over in Japan, and he said the Japanese were the nicest people he ever met, and it was the Japanese who'd killed our father! Think about that for a minute."
"All right," I said.
"I think about chemicals all the time," he said. "Sometimes I think I should go back to school and find out all the things they've found out so far about chemicals."
"I think you should," I said.
"Maybe, when they find out more about chemicals," he said, "there won't have to be policemen or wars or crazy houses or divorces or drunks or juvenile delinquints or women gone bad or anything anymore."
"That would sure be nice," I said.
"It's possible," he said.
"I beleive you," I said.
"The way they're going, everything's possible now, if they just work at it - get the money and get the smartest people and get to work. Have a crash program," he said.
"I'm for it," I said.
"Look at how some women go half off their nut once a month," he said. "Certain chemicals get loose, and the women can't help but act that way. Sometimes a certain chemical will get loose after a woman's had a baby, and she'll kill the baby. That happened four doors down from here just last week."
"How awful," I said. "I hadn't heard-"
"Most unnatural thing a woman can do is kill her own baby, but she did it," he said. "Certain chemicals in the blood made her do it, even though she knew better, didn't want to do it at all."
"Um," I said.
"You wonder what's wrong with the world-" he said, "well there's an important clue right there."

government using microwaves to control us. That's the problem with knowledge. People hoarde it and misapply it.

Remarkable Political Ad

"Bloomberg's right hand, which holds a wad of cash, moves up and down in a rhythmic motion below Bush's belt, as a grin crosses the president's face, and his arms and legs quiver momentarily." Ah, yes, the money shot. Bloomberg's campaign alleges that the "commercial clearly shows the mayor performing a sex act on Bush."
